First Method
There are two ways of achieving a custom RPG inventory. The first way is to place custom-texture resized items on slots where you'd like to hide the default inventory grid pattern. This method is almost seamless (you can still see the item tooltips) and makes it look like a really GUI with fully custom slots.

Using Custom Fonts
Using custom fonts (Oraxen or ItemsAdder will make setting up custom fonts very easy) you can have a seamless custom inventory texture without having to rely on custom textured items.
